Once again, the civilized world and, hopefully, Democratic Party leaders have received another grisly reminder of the cruelty and inhumanity of our common enemy, the merciless international terrorist. In the past week, 200 lives were snuffed out and another 1,450 wounded in a senseless massacre in an act so deliberate, so barbaric and so devilish that the peace loving people of the world are left stunned and bewildered at the magnitude of this vile hatred and utter contempt for human life. In Madrid, Spain, ten backpack bombs were brought on board four trains and detonated at three stations. Additional bombs, which did not detonate, were set to explode after rescue teams were to arrive.
Once again, terrorists have succeeded in their goal of raising the level of fear and alarm worldwide. Many in this country now wonder, “Are we next?” I am prepared to say that no attacks will occur in the United States this year, at least until after the elections. How can I make such a prediction? Although the terrorists act in a manner that is incomprehensible to the rational mind, they are not stupid. They also took a lesson from the 9-11 attacks. They fully expected the American people to run and cower from fear of the terrorist’s bomb. In that assumption they completely misjudged the spirit of the nation and the character of their newly elected Commander-in-Chief.
The country immediately rallied behind their leader and sanctioned his moves to counter the most obvious threats to our national security. Immediately, the National Guard and the Reserves were activated, airports secured, ports and border entry security improved. The Patriot Act was passed by Congress giving law officials extraordinary powers to deal with the terrorist threat at home. A Cabinet level position of Home Land Security was established. The FBI, CIA, NSA, INS and US Border Control bureaucracies were all reorganized and streamlined in areas of communication. After three years, the Afghan Taliban base for terrorism has been erased. Two thirds of al Quaida leadership have been captured or killed. The butcher of Baghdad and a center for terrorism in the Middle East was swiftly removed and hope for freedom instilled in a people who have known only torture, rape and mass execution. Not surprisingly, other hostile countries taking note of America’s resolve are now moving toward moderation and away from militancy as according to plan. Yet, we still are vulnerable.
The terrorists understand that another attack on the US would only fuel widespread support for the incumbent president and all but ensure his re-election. Better for them to wait in the hopes that the American people will become complacent again, having a false sense of security, and chose a weaker, more passive individual to replace him. The radical Islamists can be very patient. After all, they have been striving for centuries for world domination. The quest, as it involves the killing of Jews, Christians and other assorted infidels, is just as fulfilling for them as the ultimate goal.
What I can’t predict is whether the radical Islamists will be disappointed in their hope. I wish I could say with certainly that such a dramatic choice of leadership will not be presented to the American people. With all my heart, I wish I could say that both candidates contending for the top office of the most powerful country in the world were in lock step unison in their determination to rid this world of the terrorist evil and willing to expend every resource and opportunity to do so and do it alone if necessary to protect the United States of America.
Democratic primary winner, John Kerry says Bush has done it all wrong, that the threats of terrorism are “exaggerated”, that we must have the consent of international organizations before we defend ourselves, that he would treat the war on terror not as a military operation but as a “law enforcement effort”, that convicted terrorists are not deserving of the death penalty and that he would not make pre-emptive strikes to eliminate a specific threat. In short, he wants to return to the failed and suicidal national insecurity practices of the Clinton/Gore administration that brought international terrorism to our shores with a sudden unforeseen catastrophic loss of 3,000 souls. At a time when our country’s finest are deployed are on the battlefield, John Kerry has selfishly and recklessly chosen to politicize the war on terror, opposing President Bush’s successful strategies and promising to be less aggressive and militant in executing the war if he succeeds as president. If you were Osama bin Ladin, whom would you vote for?
