Account Exodus (to BB&T, which has pledged no eminent domain seizure loans)
Christian Exodus heralds the opening of its Account Exodus campaign. This campaign, based on the exciting news that BB&T (the nation's ninth largest banking institution) has taken the principled stand of refusing to finance any development projects on land seized under "eminent domain" policies, promises to put the advantage in the struggle for property rights back in the hands of the American people.
The eminent domain plague - as highlighted by the outrageous SCOTUS decision (Kelo vs. New Haven) that permitted cities to take property from home and business owners and sell it to developers under the sole "justification" that those developers would pay the given municipality higher taxes than the displaced party or parties - is known to be of great concern to Americans across the political continuum.
Reports of far-sub-market-value compensation, charging of exorbitant retroactive rent for time spent living on one's own property while battling in court to keep that property, city councils suing citizens for taking up petitions to put eminent domain issues on election ballots, and similar abominations have only heightened that concern.
Now, with BB&T's valiant pledge to refrain from taking part in this atrocity, the people of America have an unprecedented weapon in the fight to keep their property. Charles Lewis, Christian Exodus Outreach Director, emphasized, "This is an historic opportunity for those of us in BB&T’s markets to vote with our dollars by rewarding a company courageous enough to take a principled stand for property rights."
Christian Exodus's campaign will spread the word about the BB&T option. We will advocate long and hard for all those who believe in liberty and do not already have their funds at BB&T to do the following:
1. Ask their current banks if they will also pledge, in writing, to deny funding to eminent domain based projects, and
2. If the answer is no, remove their money from their accounts in these banks and deposit it in BB&T, letting their old banks know, in no uncertain terms, the reason for account closure.
Christian Exodus believes either other banks will follow suit, or BB&T will be rewarded handsomely for its patriotic and courageous stand (at these other banks' commensurate expense). Either way, we feel the financing for such schemes will dry up, pernicious projects will die on the vine, and the disgraceful concept of capricious eminent domain seizure will lose much of its viability and, hopefully, cease to be a threat to the American home or small business owner.
Cory Burnell, president of Christian Exodus, stated, "It’s an outrage that a man, unwilling to sell his property to another private individual, can have it confiscated by government for that individual’s benefit. I applaud BB&T’s refusal to be a part of these intrigues and thefts, and as a result they have earned our business. Every person concerned about property rights should close their current bank account and move their funds to BB&T."
Effective immediately, Christian Exodus will be contacting organizations, media outlets, and individuals across the spectrum of political opinion, forming coalitions, and advocating for swift grass roots action. If we cannot depend on our judges or legislators to stem the tide (and, it seems, we cannot), we the people must make it happen the old fashioned way - by voting with our feet.
-- Christian Exodus is an organization of individuals and families seeking to restore the Constitutional underpinnings of America's self-governance and the Christian roots of her culture, one local election and one moral issue at a time.
