Confronting the Liberal Blitz

Dan Abbett

In the run-up to the 2006 elections, the headlines were all about what the Democrats needed to do to win. In the run-up to the elections in 2008, the headlines are all about how pathetic the prospects are for Republicans. This is the manuscript that has been given to the lockstep Democrats and the follies that will be played out on the political stage by the mainstream media. At this point, it is unclear if Republicans even want to “win” in 08, but if they do, they had better start rehearsing for their own performances to combat an all-out liberal blitz.

The title of the liberal play that is about to debut before the electorate is “Bad News.” This political extravaganza will play morning, noon and night between now and November 2008. It is going to be tough for Republicans to attract much of an audience if they continue to use low-key rhetoric and lackluster slogans to promote their own agenda. The time has long passed to simply present rational positions and arguments, it is time to drown out the “Circus Barkers” on the left and show some flair.

Bush Administration officials, as well as Republican legislators, present their positions and arguments to support their agenda with a tone that drives one to hypnotic sleep. Immediately following is a donnybrook of excoriating criticism and ridicule from Democrats that goes unanswered by Republicans, who immediately assume a “deer in the headlights” demeanor. This is not the era of “Cavemen;” it is not necessary to go docile when beaten over the head with a rhetorical club.

For a political party whose reputation is one of strength on defense and national security, Republicans show a total unwillingness to engage their Democrat opponents. Given the confusion, misdirection and stalemate that has befallen Iraq, they don’t appear all that willing to fight an actual enemy either. This is especially troubling, as their Democrat counterparts have absolutely no intention of fighting anything but Republicans.

The first demon that Republicans need to slay is the media. For too long, they have been sacrificing their own to the media dragon, in hopes it will spare them bad press. The new media, to include the Blogosphere, talk radio and political websites, has had an impact on the media monopoly. Declining circulation and failing publications is corroborating testimony. This new media can only serve as a trusty steed however; it is up to Republican legislators to don the shiny armor.

In Chinese philosophy, it is the “Yin” and the “Yang,” the two opposites that affect the make-up of all events. Similarly, are the principles of emotionalism and pragmatism, the two forces that play a significant part in how we approach politics. Emotionalism guides our reverence for harmony and reason. It gives us our appreciation for the miracle that is life and all it provides for us. Pragmatism is the sense we draw upon for survival; it guides our drive to overcome adversity and to prosper in hostile environments. In today’s world, we are suffering from a serious case of “split personality.”

The emotionalism of the left and its desire for all things beautiful is now completely disconnected from the pragmatism of the right and its desire to develop stability and security. The result is a bellicose left, angrily demanding compliance from the right and a right too devoid of emotionalism to do much more than avoid confrontation. The absolute requirement for “bipartisanship,” the balance between emotionalism and pragmatism, is completely “bisected” at this point.

The primary cause of this disproportionate imbalance of growing emotionalism is acute malignant media bias. The first step toward recovery must be to amputate it, followed by flushing the cesspool of liberal academia in which it thrives. We must aggressively confront this affliction and rid our system of this political parasite or succumb to its agenda and suffer terminal liberal propaganda blitz.
