In his article in the May 8th issue of National Review, Ramesh Ponnuru describes the amazing fall in support for abortion since the mid-90s. Ponnuru's new book "The Party of Death" is a must read. He credits some of the success of the pro-life lobby's incremental strategy but that pails in comparison to the simple effect that ultrasound imaging has had on this issue. He sees the ubiquitous ultrasound as the turning point that propelled the incremental strategy to success.
Somewhere we still have my 10-year-old daughter's first ultrasound image. I remember how that changed my thinking. I prayed for that little mini-baby almost daily even though my Christian days were a few years away. I looked forward to each visit to see how much bigger she was. I watched in amazement during the amnio-centesis procedure when they take a little of the fluid out to determine the health and gender of the child. She alertly looked up at the needle and waved her hand at it.
The ultrasound destroys the abortion argument because it creates a bond between parent and child instinctively and immediately. You can talk about fetuses and zygotes all you want, when that woman sees the ultrasound, she sees her BABY.
Abortion is so cruel that the only way it could flourish is if the people don't see it. It must be hidden for it to continue. Ultrasound is the light that kills the darkness around the abortion issue.
The indefensability of abortion has forced the Democrats, up till now the party of death, to reconsider their position. Even Howard Dean, who seems like he'd be a good candidate for the role of evil abortion doctor in the school play, has come out against abortion. "We aren't the party of abortion," he said shortly after the 2004 elections. In fact, now is the time for the Democrats to adopt a pro-life plank. Technology will not let them escape the "Party of Death" label otherwise.
The truth is many people, myself included, WILL NOT vote for a pro-death candidate period. Thus, if the Democrats start to run more pro-life candidates like Pennsylvania's Bob Casey, look out GOP! The Republicans have already gained notoriety for being the party of Pork. Neutralize them on abortion and the party's over.
I can see God's hand at work derailing the Abortion Holocaust. All it took was that little grainy image of the itty bitty baby, and the world is moved. Light always prevails over darkness, Truth over lies. Abortion will soon lose. Thank God.
