It’s a good thing President Bush is a Texan. I’m sure he sees the similarities between shoveling horse manure and taking questions from certain members of the White House Press. Tuesday, the White House “holier than thou” press continued its undeniable liberal dogma with a question from the left wing journalist, Helen Thomas.
Obviously on top of his speaking game, President Bush decided to take a question from Helen Thomas, a widely known liberal within the White House press. Ms. Thomas boorishly “asked” the President about his decision to go to war. “I'd like to ask you, Mr. President, your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, wounds of Americans and Iraqis for a lifetime. Every reason given, publicly at least, has turned out not to be true. My question is, why did you really want to go to war? From the moment you stepped into the White House, from your Cabinet -- your Cabinet officers, intelligence people, and so forth -- what was your real reason? You have said it wasn't oil -- quest for oil, it hasn't been Israel, or anything else. What was it?” At this point, what was it that Ms. Thomas wanted the President to do? Tell the American people it was for personal gratification? State that he has an obsession with war and that this would be a good way to build his legacy? Really, what kind of question is this for a journalist to ask the President of the United States? I can totally see a left wing radio talk show host making comments like this on their program; however a real journalist does not bring their own ideologies into an interview. Of course, that would be fair and balance journalism—something that the main stream media knows little about.
At this point, The President eloquently and very respectfully stated, “I think your premise -- in all due respect to your question and to you as a lifelong journalist -- is that -- I didn't want war. To assume I wanted war is just flat wrong, Helen, in all due respect…” Before the President could finish, the uninhibited journalist broke into the President’s statement. This would be a trend in this segment of the press conference. In fact, President Bush said “excuse me” four times to Ms. Thomas when she broke into his answers. The President continued, “No President wants war. Everything you may have heard is that, but it's just simply not true. My attitude about the defense of this country changed on September the 11th. We -- when we got attacked, I vowed then and there to use every asset at my disposal to protect the American people. Our foreign policy changed on that day, Helen. You know, we used to think we were secure because of oceans and previous diplomacy. But we realized on September the 11th, 2001, that killers could destroy innocent life. And I'm never going to forget it. And I'm never going to forget the vow I made to the American people that we will do everything in our power to protect our people.” This is one of the Reagan moments that the President has demonstrated throughout his two terms in office. His determination to spread freedom and protect our country has to make every American proud they live in the United States of America.
Now I am all for debate. Debate is always a must before we enter any conflict. However, we had a debate before we entered Afghanistan and Iraq. Remember, the Constitution does not allow the President to declare war. The Congress must give the President the authority—and the Congress did just that! Yes, even John Kerry voted for the war…before he voted against it.
Obviously I’m not surprised at the left wing hypocrites within the press. These vultures will attack the President every time they get a chance. However, they should at least be more tasteful. The blatant cynicism and more accurately, the extreme loathing for President Bush that the main stream media and some members of the White House Press illustrate, gives a tainted view on our country—and that should never be tolerated! Thus, Helen Thomas would be advised to know, that when you play with a Texan, you’re going to be lassoed in front of the press for slanted journalism.
