America, Get Over Race

Doug Hagin

Freedom High School in Oakley, California made big news and big controversy recently when a freshman there, Lisa McClelland attempted to start a Caucasian Club. Of course her efforts became a target for the predictable cries of racism and bigotry.

It is a fact in America today that while Hispanic Club’s, African-American Clubs, or Asian Clubs are welcomed as diverse and wonderful, a White Club is berated as evil and racist. This is the result of the climate of racial hostility and divisions created by the multi-culturalists and political correctors in our nation.

Instead of helping to create a truly color-blind society, as they claim to desire, these folks have only succeeded in labeling everyone by skin color. And in the process they have managed to increase rather than decrease racial tensions in America.

These people have never missed a chance to make race not only an issue but also the only issue at the drop of a hat, and they have usually been the ones dropping the hat in the first place. And usually they have been very quick to portray White people, especially White men, as the oppressors and the minorities as the victims in every instance.

So it was really no surprise when many Conservatives threw their support behind the effort to start a Caucasian Club at Freedom High School. Many saw it as a blow to be struck against the hypocrisy of political correctness and the frankly anti-White bigotry which infiltrates the political correctness movement.

Really though, this whole idea of school clubs based on nothing more than skin color is a pretty ridiculous standard to aim for isn’t it? Yes it is America and yes we should have the freedom to form and join such clubs if we like. The freedom of association is, after all, one of our constitutionally guaranteed liberties.

Certainly the fact is skin color is truly only skin deep. It really has nothing to do with intellect, personality, wit, or anything of any real importance. It is only a color, nothing more. And frankly this business of trying to identify people and label them by pigmentation is getting truly tiresome. At some point surely we can get over our obsession with race and color. And surely we should welcome a day where people cease to blame their skin color for every problem they encounter in life.

We know that people like Jesse Jackson and groups like the NAACP have certainly made careers out of exploiting and even creating racism at every opportunity. This might line their pockets but it has done great damage to race relations by embittering certain groups at the expense of other groups. This must stop and more race-based clubs in our schools is not the way to stop it.

So really is supporting the formation of a White race based club going to further the Conservative agenda of individuality and a colorblind America? Surely not my friends. And again make certain you understand I fully support the right of this young lady to form her club. It is the result I question.

Perhaps a more worthwhile goal might be to form a club based on a common interest or heritage rather than on race. Face it, the longer we emphasize race, the longer it will take until we get to the point where it really does not matter.

Conservative values, which built this nation focus not on skin color, or religion, or gender, but on people. We do not believe in hyphenating Americans, we instead believe in just calling us all Americans. This is a very noble goal and one, which will benefit all of us. But getting there is made tougher when we fall into the trap of dividing by skin color.

Leave that course to the political left, it suits them. Let them continue to label everyone. Let them continue their course of hyphenating Americans. Let them keep looking at the differences instead of the commonalities of Americans. This is the ideal they have chosen to embrace.

There is nothing to be gained by copying their inane fixation on race based clubs and playing one group against another. Sure we could resign ourselves to simply saying “if they can do it so can we”, but really what victory will this course win us?

The answer is none. Conservatives in this nation must step above the petty racial politics practiced by the left. If they want to rant about skin color let us let them. It will be seen for what it is, simple race baiting.

As for us we have the right message for racial tolerance and unity. Judge people by their actions, not their color. Again there is nothing at all wrong with celebrating all the unique cultures and heritages which exist in our great country. Let us never forget those, and let us never let go of them. But let us at the same time embrace our American heritage, which unites us all.
