Pro-Chosen: When does a Woman Become a Woman?

Derek Oaks

The argument of the pro-choice crowd has always been on the grounds of liberty for women. “Women should have the right to control their body,” they say. “Women should be able to choose their own destinies, without being hamstrung by the intrusive morals of others or laws that tell them what they can and cannot do with their bodies. They say that the issue is not abortion, but choice.

They have argued successfully on the national level for a woman’s ability to choose abortion, even by way of a partial-birth abortion, and with enough legal tiptoeing and a letter from the right doctor we have abortion up to the time of delivery. Victory for choice, they say.

Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice organizations have fought for teenage abortions without parental consent (I am still at a loss to understand how leaving ‘parents’ out of the loop on such an important decision is “planned parenthood). They think that the freedom to choose her own life overrides a young girl’s parent’s responsibility over her until her 18th birthday. Hooray for choice.

The real question in all of this is—when does a woman become a woman? It goes without saying that of the millions (yes, millions for those of you who want to ignore this fact) of abortions that are performed in the United States alone annually, a fair percentage of them are embryonic women. With the wonders of science today, we can even tell long before birth whether or not the child will be a boy or girl. In fact, many parents-to-be spend large amounts of money before the birth because, “It’s a girl.” Normally, they have a name picked out, and many talk to the “little girl” before her birthday.

So when does a woman become a woman? As I said, science can tell you the sex before birth, and there is NO DOUBT that the creature inside the womb is a living, breathing organism. So logic follows that we are killing little girls with many of our abortions. But when do they become women? When do they get the right to choose that is so vigorously fought for once we put a bow in their hair?

Taken down this road, it becomes apparent that the Pro-choice crowd does not want freedom, they want freedom from responsibility. They want a diminished role of parents in their kids’ lives. They want to have a choice for only some women. And there are millions of future mothers, CEOs, teachers, scientists and beautiful little women who will never be given that choice. Let’s hear it for choice.
